Our summer vacation is coming up!
Dixie and I will be taking our summer vacation this year from Saturday, July 25 to Monday, August 3. ☀️
We're going to a little spa town for 9 days and really looking forward to thermal waters, swimming, and lots of recharging.
Holidays and Vacations
Which got us to thinking about holidays and vacations. We distinguish the two in North America and it's a distinction based on personal agency.
Generally, a vacation is a period of rest and you, yourself, set its boundaries. In other words, you can go on vacation any time you like and do whatever you like. It often includes the idea of travel and its best example is summer vacation (even though summer vacation times are often set by school schedules, the actual vacation part of it is set by you).
A holiday, on the other hand, is a festive celebration, typically determined by church and culture (ie, not by you, since the holiday still happens regardless of your participation). Its best example is Christmas holidays.
So, you can go on vacation during your Christmas holidays. And there can be a holiday during your vacation.
It makes sense, though, doesn't it?
